Staff Biographies
Adrienne Ammerman joined the staff of NASBHC in November 2009 as the Communications Director. Prior to joining NASBHC, Adrienne managed press communications for the National Women's Law Center and was responsible for marketing and communications at Bread for the City, a non-profit that provides direct services to low-income DC residents. Adrienne first became passionate about the potential to use communications to promote and enhance health and well-being of young people while a fellow at an adolescent health non-profit in New Delhi, India, where she worked with Indian media to raise awareness about child marriage and teen pregnancy. Adrienne graduated with a BA in gender & sexuality from the New School in New York City, and is currently an MA candidate in health communication at Johns Hopkins University.
Laura Brey joined the NASBHC staff in October of 2000 as the Director of its new Center for Technical Assistance and Training. She is now NASBHC’s Director of Training and manages the annual convention, and all other NASBHC technical assistance and training requests and initiatives. Her thirty year career in public health and nonprofit administration, management, consultation, and training includes: Clinical Service Coordinator for the NC Division of Public Health, Making the Grade in NC, the State Office for the development, funding, and oversight for NC’s 50 SB/SLHCs; Project Director for the American Medical Association’s GAPS in School-Based Health Centers Initiative, a five-year national project of the Carnegie Corporation of New York focused on the implementation of clinical preventive services in SB/SLHCs; Owner and Senior Partner, Chicago HealthCare Management Consultants, Inc., a public health and nonprofit management consulting firm; Assistant Administrator for Ambulatory Care, Cook County Hospital’s Fantus Health Center, and Health Education Coordinator, Illinois Migrant Council. Laura is an Illinois native and received her Bachelor of Arts in Teaching, French, Spanish, and School Health Education and her Master of Science in Community Health Education and Administration from University of Illinois.
Whitney Brimfield joined NASBHC in June 2007 as the Development Director. In her position she works closely with the Executive Director, Board, staff, and field to achieve the resource development goals of the organization and also works on fundraising and planning for NASBHC’s annual convention. Whitney’s background is in reproductive health, adolescent health, and health communications. Before joining NASBHC, Whitney managed corporate marketing for a clinical trial patient recruitment firm and served as the Development Director at the DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, where she developed her passion for protecting adolescent health. Whitney has a BA in Biology from Haverford College and in 2004 she received her Masters in Health Science from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD.
Willie Graves joined NASBHC in April 2010 as an Accountant working in the General Administration area. In his position, he works closely with the administrative staff in managing the financial and daily accounting operations of NASBHC. Willie has a background in accounting operations, policies and procedures and in financial systems implementation, maintenance, enhancements and integration. Prior to joining NASBHC he worked for the Federal government for more than 37 years. He has held several positions while working in the Internal Revenue Service. These positions included: Chief, Systems and Report Management Branch, Chief, Systems Stabilization Section, Budget and Accounting Analyst and Chief, Accounting Unit in the Operations Branch. He has also worked in the Department of Energy, Cost of Living Council, Price Commission, and the Library of Congress. As part of his approach to life for giving back to the community, Willie has volunteered to serve as Treasurer for the Washington Tennis Association (WTA), Mid-Eastern Tennis Association (META) and the Lake Arbor Civic Association (LACA). Willie also serves on the Board of Directors for the Nation’s Capital Area United States Bowling Congress Association (NCAUSBCA). Willie was born in Washington, DC and has made the DC Metro area his home. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University, now part of George Washington University, with an Associate of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Willie is married to a very lovely wife and in his remaining free time, Willie enjoys bowling, playing tennis and card games, cooking and spending time with family and friends.
Laura Hurwitz joined the staff of NASBHC in July 2006 as the School Mental Health Project Director to manage an initiative to build school mental health capacity in state and local education agencies through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control. Previously, Laura was the Project Coordinator of the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership, a state-wide effort to develop a comprehensive, coordinated approach to mental health services that includes prevention, early intervention and treatment for all children and adolescents. Fluent in Spanish, she has worked in San José, Costa Rica, as well as in a variety of immigrant communities in Chicago and has worked extensively with children and adolescents in both school and community settings. She became passionate about the school based health model during her five years as the Mental Health Supervisor in a School Based Health Center Program, sponsored by Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, where she provided direct services and coordinated the mental health program. Additionally, Laura was active in the Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers as co-chair of the mental health committee and as a member of the Coalition’s steering committee. Laura is a New York native and received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Williams College and her masters in social work from the University of Michigan.
Linda Juszczak, DNSc, MPH, MS, CPNP is NASBHC's Executive Director. Prior to assuming this position she served as both the Interim Executive Director and Deputy Director with responsibility for overseeing the organization’s programmatic work. She is also responsible for all data, evaluation, and quality improvement work in the organization. Her 35 years of professional experience includes work as a nurse practitioner and a director for hospital, community, and school-based programs for adolescents. She has also held responsibilities as a faculty member and for developing policies impacting adolescents and SBHCs. She served as Deputy Director of the School Health Policy Initiative at Montefiore Medical Center and director of SBHCs at North Shore University Hospital in New York. She was the founding president of the New York Coalition for School Based Primary Care and is a founding member and past president of the NASBHC. Linda’s faculty appointments have been at Yale University, New York University, Cornell University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from Skidmore College, a masters in nursing at the University of Colorado, a Pediatric Nurse Associate certificate and masters in public health from the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in nursing from Yale University. Linda has published extensively on adolescent health and school based health care. She continues to maintain a practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner in adolescent medicine.
Bridget Kelleher joined NASBHC in June 2010 as the Technical Assistance and Training Program Assistant. She graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in sociology and a minor in public health. Prior to joining NASBHC, she engaged in public health related work including data collection for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and working as a Shift Coordinator and advocacy intern at Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women in Boston. She is interested in issues surrounding maternal and child health and community development, and would like to eventually pursue a Masters in public health.
Alicia Newell joined NASBHC in May 2008, as Administrative Assistant, Programs. She is responsible for the daily office administration of the National Office and serves as the liaison for the NASBHC Board of Directors. Alicia has over 15 years of administrative experience and has held a variety of administrative positions. She held the position of Administrative Assistant with the Office of Employee Benefits and Exempt Organizations of the Internal Revenue Service for five years. Because of her administrative expertise, Alicia was invited to provide administrative support to two attorneys who left the Internal Revenue Service and started the independent law firm of Bosley Hutzelman. She served in the position of Firm Administrator with Bosley Hutzelman for seven years before joining The Mitchellville School where she served as Business Administrator for four years. During her many years of service, Alicia has demonstrated solid administrative and office skills.
Joshua Rovner joined NASBHC in April 2010 as the Director of Policy and Advocacy. In his prior position, he was Manager of Policy and Advocacy for Metro TeenAIDS, which seeks to protect young people in Washington, DC, from HIV and AIDS. At MTA, Josh pushed to guarantee comprehensive health education for all District public school students. Previously, he was the Associate Director of Federal Relations for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, where he advocated for U.S. Food and Drug Administration oversight over the manufacturing, advertising, and marketing of tobacco products. He also served as the Policy Director for the Committee on Public Services in the Council of the District of Columbia. Josh holds a Master’s in Public Policy from the George Washington University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Rochester. Originally from Massachusetts, Josh now lives in Silver Spring, MD, with his wife, Christine, and children, Sara and Jonah.
Jan Strozer joined NASBHC in February 2009. She is responsible for supervising program interns, directing activities related to mental health quality improvement, continuous quality improvement, state-national training and technical assistance partnership; and assisting with SBHC census. Before joining NASBHC, Jan was the Pediatric Project Manager for Access Community Health Network, a Data Manager for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, a Research Analyst with Pinkerton Computer Consultants, and a consultant. Jan holds a Master of Social Work, Clinical Concentration with Specialization in Child, Adolescent, and Family Health, The University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD: 2006 ,Master of Public Administration, University of Akron, Akron, OH: 1997 and a B.A., Sociology/Urban Studies, The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, 1995.
Deirdre Taylor has been with NASBHC since September 1998. Deirdre is responsible managing the administrative function of the organization which includes the databases, website, financial oversight, computer equipment, and logistics for the Annual Convention. Deirdre came to NASBHC with over 16 years of administrative and financial experience. She was the Office Manager for a construction union and volunteered bookkeeping services to her youngest daughters’ daycare center as well as prepared taxes for Jackson Hewett. While working full time and raising children, Deirdre earned a degree in accounting from Strayer University and a certificate in Information Technology and Network Administration from Computer Learning Center.
