School Mental Health Capacity Building Partnership (SMH-CBP)
In May of 2006, NASBHC received a five-year cooperative agreement with the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Division of Adolescent Health (DASH) to build capacity of state and local education agencies to provide effective and sustainable school mental health services to young people. In collaboration with its partner organizations, steering committee, and workgroup members, NASBHC’s School Mental Health Capacity Building Partnership (SMH-CBP) has developed the following resources for education agencies and other school mental health partners to develop high quality, school-based mental health services.
Best Practices And Lessons Learned From Early Adopter States:
- Discussion group summaries and state-specific descriptions of programs and activities in Maryland , Missouri, Ohio, and Oregon can be found by clicking on each state.
- "Ten Critical Factors to School Mental Health: What Early Adopters Say" (and one pager) summarizes common themes and strategies related to advancing school mental health at the state level.
- "What Students Have to Say about Mental Health" communicates, directly from the youth perspective, how schools can support students. A print brochure is available by contacting anewell@nasbhc.org
Training materials in four key areas essential to school mental health (still under development):
- What is School Mental Health?-- Information and resources about school mental health, how it is defined, and the benefits and rationale for having mental health services in schools.
- Quality Assessment and Improvement–Information about the what, why, and how of quality assessment and improvement (QAI) in school mental health. NASBHC’s on-line QAI tool, the Mental Health Planning and Evaluation Template (MHPET), is highlighted as a method for a QAI process in your school-based health center and/or school.
- Marketing School Mental Health–Information related to marketing school mental health to educators. You will also find communications materials that can be used in “making the case” for school mental health.
- System Level Planning–Information about how to advance school mental health at the state or district level as well as information about specific statewide school
