2008 Convention Call for Abstracts
The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care seeks expertise, promising, best, and evidence-based practices, resources, and tools on a myriad of interdisciplinary topics for the2008 national school-based health care convention, June 25-28, 2008, to be held atthe Century Plaza Hyatt Regency Hotel, Los Angeles, CA

Presentation Tracks and Program Priorities
The convention will be organized into seven workshop tracks, each to include a series of concurrent sessions. The tracks, their definitions and identified priorities for abstracts are as follows:
Track 1. Mental health skills: specific to delivering a continuum of behavioral health services including mental health promotion, prevention, early intervention, and treatment in a SBHC.
Priorities for 2008 workshop selection:
- Successful models of mental health and school collaboration (e.g. student support teams, coordinated school health)
- Universal school-wide prevention strategies
- Best practices in screening and early intervention
- Innovative treatment modalities in the SBHC setting
- School-based substance abuse services
- Cultural Competence and Mental Health
- Family engagement in mental health services
- Addressing mental health needs of GLBT youth
- Trauma and loss
- School violence
Track 2. Primary Care, Oral Heath and Nutrition: specific to delivering clinical services

Track 3. Evaluation and Quality: Using quality improvement strategies to evaluate and sustain services, interventions, and programs in SBHC.

- Evidence-based practice outcomes (mental health, asthma, immunizations, etc)
- Uniform data elements
- Challenges with data
- Evaluation 101
- A primer of various methodological approaches
- Useful research methodologies in the SBHC setting
- Dealing with IRB issues when conducting research in school settings
- Evaluating mental health programs
Track 4. Operations and administration: topics that relate specifically to the management of SBHC program, including integration with school, fundraising, policies and procedures, etc.
Priorities for 2008 workshop selection:

SBHC economic opportunities for infrastructure and program funding (state and local, donor fund development, private funder relationships and strategies

Track 5. Policy and Advocacy: topics that relate to broad financing, funding, communications, public and government relations.
Priorities for 2008 workshop selection:

SBHCs in the policy agendas of influential child health, education, social justice and/or welfare coalitions/organizations

Third party reimbursement policy opportunities and strategies

Federal policy change for SBHCs: impacts and opportunities at the local SBHC level

Finding and creating solutions for state administrative and legislative policy change

Policy and partnership opportunities in the educational arena

Tailoring messages to specific audiences

Clinicians as advocates for policy change

Local policy strategies (financing, nutrition, etc.)
Track 6. Youth and Community Engagement: topics that relate successful skills and approaches of involving youth, families and community supporters in leadership, negotiation, partnership development, and advocacy strategy for SBHCs at the local level.
Priorities for 2008 workshop selection:
- Communicating with and building teams of different races, culture, and classes
- Reaching out to and working with unions, clergy, business, and local organizations
- Building and engaging families as SBHC supporters/advocates
- Engaging students of all ages in the life of the SBHC, including student advisory boards, advocacy and leadership
- Engaging and partnering with the education community to advise policy, techniques, and communication
- Youth-adult partnerships
Track 7. NEW Leadership in Child and Adolescent Health: topics that relate to informing and influencing practice and national, state, and local policy.

Competitive Selection process
Workshop proposals and poster abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee for content, presenter’s credentials, description, summary, and measurable objectives. Submission of an abstract does not guarantee participation in the convention program. The abstract review committee reserves the right to assign accepted abstracts to other tracks other than the one originally applied for.
The peer review process will provide a technical and programmatic evaluation of all abstracts by a panel of professionals who are considered topic area experts. The applications will be read and scored using the following criteria:

Notification of applicants’ status will be made January 2008. All applications must adhere to the guidelines. Incomplete applications will not be considered. A separate application must be completed for each submission.
Workshop Presenter Responsibilities
In an effort to assure workshop descrip-tion represents workshop presentation and to assure ample handouts are available to all, the workshop presenter will be ask to sign a presenter agreement contract. The workshop presenter agree(s) to the following responsibilities:

Speaker will be available for presentation on any of the convention dates, June 25-28, 2008. There is no negotiation with regard to placement on convention agenda.

Speaker will register for convention (NASBHC offers a reduced registration fee for speakers).

Speaker will prepare a handout for their session.
-
Speaker will provide NASBHC with computer files of a master set of handouts by deadline, or assume personal responsibility for providing an adequate number of handouts for their presentation.

Speaker will agree to audio recording of their session, providing a computer file copy of their presentation and handouts at speaker check-in (on CD or jump drive), and placement of audio recording and handouts on a CD-ROM for distribution to conference participants.

Speaker will communicate any changes from the initial abstract to the national program office.
-
Speaker will prepare their presentation in a format to be displayed on an LCD panel projector (presenter must bring their own laptop).
