Welcome to the NASBHC Road Map!
You are at the point of considering, wanting, or working towards opening a school-based health center (SBHC) -- in your school. Serving students, helping them to be healthier and better prepared to learn. You have a vision; a dream; a journey ahead of you.
You are getting in your car, ready to start your engine. Have you put on your seat belt? Checked your review mirror, made sure there is gas in the tank and air in the tires? Do you have enough music and snacks to keep you going? Do you have a map reader and a driving buddy?
Your journey will be interesting, with many curves and detours, refreshing vistas, fun side trips, overheating, some disappointing dead ends, and maybe a flat tire or two along the way.
However, you are not journeying alone. There have been many pioneers before you. The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC) Road Map is a tool to help you on your journey from the early stages of considering a SBHC through the first year or two of operations.
The Road Map is like having the trunk of your car filled with resources, tools, policies and procedures, samples, and links that will make your trip a little easier.
There are ten categories or “exits” to explore. Although numbered one through ten, they are not entirely linear and not dependent on one another. What you need on your journey and when you need it depends on your past experiences and your own set of skills that you bring along on the trip. However, with any journey, you may want to take Exit One at Planning and Evaluation. It helps to lay the foundation for the rest of the journey.
Each category will have resources broken down into types: tools, presentations, NASBHC policy and procedure templates, SBHC samples, and reference materials. In addition, there are links or “detours” to other websites for additional resources and organizations that may help you on your journey. The Road Map is scheduled for improvements and maintenance over time, with new supporting materials and resources added as they become available. Let’s take a pit stop and look at the categories.
- Exit 1: Planning and Evaluation
- Exit 2: Communication
- Exit 3: Facilities
- Exit 4: Management Information Systems (MIS)
- Exit 5: Fiscal Management
- Exit 6: Human Resources
- Exit 7: Practice Compliance
- Exit 8: Business Operations
- Exit 9: Care Management
- Exit 10: Advocacy
