Interview with Dr. Morton Sherman:
The Connection Between School Mental Health and Academics

Establishing and maintaining support from school administrators is essential to the success of your school mental health (SMH) program.   In marketing SMH, it is important to demonstrate the impact that programs, services, and strategies have on students’ and schools’ educational outcomes.  Two critical steps in marketing are “developing your messages” and “knowing your audience.”  The School Mental Health - Capacity Building Partnership (SMH-CBP) held the following interview with a school superintendent to help SMH stakeholders develop messages about the connection between school mental health and academic outcomes that will resonate with school administrators.

The following clips were taken from an interview with Dr. Morton Sherman, Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools, conducted by Laura Hurwitz, Director of School Mental Health Programs at NASBHC.

Dr. Sherman is a well-respected, nationally recognized educator with more than 25 years of experience in raising academic standards, closing achievement gaps and uniting stakeholders.  As an educator and as a parent, Dr. Sherman has also been a strong advocate for school mental health. He has written two feature articles on this topic for The School Administrator, a publication of the American Association of School Administrators.  Dr. Sherman is a member of NASBHC’s SMH-CBP steering committee.
